What We Do
We offer a full line of dog, cat, reptile, small mammal, and aquatics products. We have an aquarium service division that performs aquarium installations and maintenance all throughout mid-Michigan. We are USDA licensed and have an experienced vet and small animal exotic breeder on site. We strive to be a resource center in the community. We run an in-house small animal, fish, and reptile rescue. We partner with Ingham County Animal Control to provide a mobile food pantry as well as vaccine clinic. We offer a free ask the trainer session every month. We also offer services such as birthday parties, kids animal yoga, and more!
History and Growth
Preuss Pets has roots all the way back to the 1920’s when Frank Preuss was a brick mason and build some of the buildings in old town. He also ran 3 successful businesses in the old town area. In the 1980’s Jean Preuss started a fish store in Pennsylvania and believed strongly in the importance of creating meaningful connections through aquariums. The Preuss family moved to the Haslett area in the late 80’s where they started Preuss Animal House after Jean ran a small pet shop in East Lansing. The move to Old Town in 2005 was a decision made after zip code analysis and learning that many Preuss customers drive from 2-4 hours to visit. We wanted to be somewhere more centralized. Purchasing the current Preuss building also allowed us to grow and expand, get creative through owning rather than renting, and be a part of the amazing Old Town neighborhood.
Awards and Recognitions
Preuss Pets received the highest honor through the World Pet Association, the lifetime industry legacy leader of the year award. Amongst all pet stores, we won for our commitment to responsible animal care, top notch education, and health practices.
Preuss Pets was featured on the Stephen Colbert show 2 years in a row for being an exceptional small business as well as highlighting the importance of shopping local during the pandemic.
