Friedland Industries

est. 1886

We cut, shear, sort, shred, and bale recyclable materials to manufacture products to ridged specifications that are then sold to mills, smelters, and foundries where they are repulped or remelted into something new. We offer custom recycling solutions for businesses by offering a variety of different containers to capture these materials. We operate our own fleet of trucks to efficiently and safely transport these materials to and from our facility, along with several certified scales in-house that allow us to purchase these materials from the public. We also operate document destruction services with various secure containers
for both businesses and individuals, along with being open to the public for sensitive material drop off and destruction.

History & Achievements

Friedland Industries, Inc. was founded in 1886 by David Friedland, an immigrant from Latvia, who began buying and selling furs, rags, and metals around Lansing. As his business grew, he purchased land on the same corner of Maple and Center streets we operate at today and erected a building and receiving yard. As time went on, horses and wagons were replaced by trucks and trailers, and the business transitioned from peddling furs and rags to metals and paper. Under Bernie Friedland, son of David, saw the addition of more modern equipment such as hydraulic cranes, balers, and shears, as well as expansions at our plant. Larry Bass, son in law of Bernie, brought continued grown and expansion of the business to where we are today, with digitized operating software with real time operating, dispatch, and inventory data, several more pieces of equipment, and our expansive facility which operates on 10 acres in the heart of Old Town. We have been ISRI members (Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries) now ReMA (Recycled Materials Association) since its inception. We are the winners of the 2015 Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Small Business award, and are avid supporters of the Michigan National Guard.

Community Involvement

One of the ways we give back is the annual Scrapfest event. It started out as a local competition, but it’s grown so much, last year we had over 20 teams competing to create art with scrap metal. We also do document destruction month in April, where every Wednesday people could come in and say, bring in as much paper as they can, and we shred it for a five dollar donation, and all the proceeds go to a charity around the Lansing area. We have partnered with The Davies Project, Lansing SAVE, Mikey 23 Foundation, and several others. The charity sponsored by document destruction month is also sponsored by Scrapfest, so a portion of the proceeds from the sale of sculptures goes to the charity, too.
