Volunteer of the Month: Kristin Bannon
Community Involvement as a New Resident
Volunteering and giving my time to benefit the lives of others is a big priority for me. As a newer Michigan resident from Illinois, I knew when I moved here that I wanted to contribute to making my community a better place as well as meet other people who were of the giving back mindset. Kind and selfless people are my kind of people. I reside in Charlotte and have volunteered at numerous events there, including "Charlotte Celebrates", the Eaton County Fair, the town's car show, Charlotte schools Booster club, and any other events where I could lend a hand. I have also spent time volunteering at U of M hospital as a patient concierge, visiting patient rooms and providing company and conversation. Why Old Town?
I discovered Old Town when someone recommended Meat BBQ and was immediately taken with the cool and fun vibe of the area. And of course, the amazing BBQ and other restaurants that are delicious as well as shopping at the fun shops. Upon recently discovering the group "Old Town Commercial Association," specifically Lumberjack Fest, it sounded like a blast, and I knew I wanted to join the volunteer team, and I am so glad I did. It was my first event volunteering in Old Town, but I hope to do more. The team there is full of energy, and I admire their passion to their community. Besides volunteering, I have 2 awesome teenage sons who make me proud daily, I am an English as a Second language teacher and mentor teaching interns from MSU, passionate about fitness and healthy eating, cooking and baking with my son, playing golf with my other son, biking and hiking, and am ready for the summer weather already to get out on the trails!
To anyone who has thought about volunteering, DO IT! It is such a great opportunity to meet others and connect. I knew very few people upon moving here and I have met such lovely people from my volunteer opportunities, experienced a sense of satisfaction and joy, and have been inspired by others who care.
