When you step into the jungle-like, Caribbean atmosphere of Preuss Pets, you’re expecting to see snakes, lizards, and other reptiles, but you’ll also find rodents, birds, kittens, fish and many other animals. The “Pet Store with a Purpose” is a third-generation family business owned by the Preuss family. Founded on N. Cedar St., Preuss Pets moved to Old Town in 2005 to “encourage meaningful connections between people and pets by providing healthy animals, quality pet products and community education.” After a trip to the Dominican Republic, the Preuss family, including Debbie and Rick Preuss, modeled their store after the Caribbean lifestyle, even including a colorful, animal-filled bus!
Along with numerous pets, the store also includes a classroom that is used for birthday parties, school trips and other events. With instructional lessons and hands-on interactions with pets, the classroom serves to help Preuss Pets fulfill their mission to educate young children and the young at heart.
The Preuss family prides themselves on their dedication to fish, especially the freshwater variety. With an on-staff veterinarian specializing in fish, Preuss Pets commits themselves to making healthier pets by breeding fish in-store. In addition to breeding, Preuss Pets helps make it easier to own a fish by offering installation and servicing for aquariums.
On Oct. 21, Preuss Pets will take part in the annual Howloween by being a stop for Dog Trick-or-Treating and hosting Yappy Hour. Families and their dogs are invited to attend Yappy Hour from 7-9 p.m. when Preuss Pets will have an open-air photo booth, costume contest with cash prizes, owner and dog treats from AnnaBelle’s Pet Station, and specials throughout the store.
