Old Town General Store Now Open!

The Old Town Commercial Association is excited to welcome another new business to the neighborhood!

On May 3, the Old Town General Store, located next to Preuss Pets at 408 E. Grand River, officially opened its doors to the public.
Store owner Maria Van Atta said with the start of this new business, she hopes to fill a void in Old Town, which currently has no grocery store. Van Atta said she chose to open her store in Old Town because it’s where she grew up, and she fell in love with this particular building because of its appealing aesthetics.
“It just had the charm I was looking for,” she said. “It looks like a general store.”

At the shop, which sells specialty foods, fresh produce and more, Van Atta said she wants to supply healthy foods sourced from Michigan suppliers with an emphasis on organic and sustainable practices.

The store will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday as well as from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the first Sunday of every month in correlation with Old Town’s First Sunday Gallery Walks.

Although the store officially opened May 3, there will be a special grand opening event June 15, which will feature live music, food samplings and an opportunity for customers to interact with the food vendors whose products are sold at the store.
Van Atta said she sees her new store as an opportunity to give back to the community she cherishes.
“I’ve always loved this area, and I was really sad to see it go downhill years ago,” she said. “I want to support Old Town businesses and grow Old Town.”
